"Spoons" comes from the title of our debut show, And the Spoon Ran Away with the Spoon: A Lesbian Cabaret. It was naturally shortened to "Spoons" during the rehearsal process and stuck with us ever since!
Coincidentally, many of our team members & co-collaborators are neurodivergent, and our co-founder, Taylor, is also chronically ill, which creates an unexpected but very fitting second-interpretation of the name "Spoons." Our collective spoons limits impact our work on every level. You'll notice themes & shout-outs to chronic illness and neurodivergency within most of our shows, and we arrange our production calendars to accommodate our bodies rather than the other way around. That means we do fewer shows, but those we do are created sustainably and without contributing to burn out in our creators and performers.
What's the deal with "spoons"?
What is Spoons Cabaret?
Spoons Cabaret produces cabaret and variety shows created and performed by marginalized queer artists for marginalized queer audiences. Spoons productions center and celebrate sapphic, genderqueer, neurodivergent, racially- and ability-diverse stories and artists, fostering visibility, connection, and high-quality entertainment for the queer community’s most overlooked members.
The SPOONS team has been producing cabaret performances together for just over 7 years now, and have worked with many venues across NYC including Don't Tell Mama, Green Room 42, and The Duplex.
Our goal is to uplift the voices and experiences of queer identities that are traditionally under-represented in LGBTQ+ and mainstream media and to connect marginalized queer audiences with local artists of similar identities.
